Public vs Private IP: Key Differences
Devices on your home network usually have private IP addresses, while your internet connection presents one public IP address to websites and services.
Private IP address
A private IP is used inside your local network, such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. It is not directly reachable from the public internet.
Public IP address
A public IP is what external sites see when you browse. It is assigned by your internet provider and may change over time.
Why this matters
- Troubleshooting connectivity issues
- Remote access setup
- Port forwarding and router settings
- Security and privacy checks
