IPv4 vs IPv6: What Is the Difference?

If you searched for "what is my IP", you probably saw both IPv4 and IPv6. They are two versions of internet addressing, and each one may be available depending on your network.

What is IPv4?

IPv4 is the older format, for example 192.168.1.1. It is still widely used, but the address space is limited.

What is IPv6?

IPv6 is the newer format, for example 2001:db8::1. It supports a much larger number of addresses and is designed for modern internet growth.

Why you might see both

Many internet providers run dual-stack networks, so your connection can have both IPv4 and IPv6 at the same time.
